Legionella Monitoring in Cooling Towers
Monitoring for legionella in Cooling Tower systems to Satisfy H&SE requirements.
The ACoP advises that the risk from exposure to legionella should be prevented or controlled and that the precautions taken should be monitored to ensure that they remain effective.

The routine monitoring scheme for Cooling systems should also include periodic sampling for the presence of legionella bacteria.
Legionnaires Disease the control of legionella bacteria in water systems
- It should be undertaken at least quarterly
- On new systems, and when establishing a treatment programme, sampling should be carried out on a monthly basis, until it can be shown that the system is under control.
- Sampling method should be in accordance with ISO 11731:1998.
- Samples should be tested by a UKAS accredited Laboratory.
- Experienced microbiologists should carry out the interpretation of any results.
- Monitoring for legionella bacteria should not be used as a substitute in any way for vigilance with control strategies and those measures identified in the risk assessment.
